How will AI change the job market? Are we facing a revolution?
Artificial intelligence is one of the key factors influencing the future job market. Much is said today about the opportunities and benefits, but also about the threats posed by the dynamic development of new technologies. How will AI change the job market?
With AI towards benefits: automation, high efficiency, and new possibilities
AI is revolutionizing the job market. The impact of artificial intelligence can be seen in various business areas. Above all, it streamlines analytical processes. AI can analyze vast amounts of data to extract valuable information, trends, and patterns. This allows companies to better understand their customers, predict market behaviors, optimize business processes, and make more accurate decisions.
Artificial intelligence automates routine and repetitive tasks—such as document classification, invoice processing, or analyzing candidate resumes. This translates into time savings and greater employee efficiency.
AI is also used in customer service. Chatbots, used in e-commerce among others, are very popular. Chatbots are special computer programs designed to interact with humans in a way similar to human conversation. Chatbots automate customer service, answer user questions, and provide information about products or services. Moreover, they can conduct simple transactions. Thanks to artificial intelligence, companies can respond more quickly to customer needs, thereby improving user experience.
Let’s not forget about marketing. AI enables the personalization of marketing campaigns by analyzing data about potential and current customers and tailoring communication and offers to the personal preferences and needs of specific target groups or users (according to patterns designed by the team). In other words, AI allows for faster and more effective reaching of audiences, which can translate into increased marketing activity efficiency.
AI streamlines production and logistics processes
Artificial intelligence is successfully used by manufacturing companies. AI is applied in optimizing production processes, inventory planning, supply chain management, and forecasting product demand. Thanks to artificial intelligence, companies operating in the manufacturing sector can increase operational efficiency while reducing costs and improving the quality of services. Fewer jobs by as much as 40%?
According to the International Monetary Fund, the development of artificial intelligence could reduce the number of jobs by as much as 40%. Intellectual workers are primarily at risk, more so than physical workers. This is already happening – in just two weeks of 2024, nearly 6,000 employees from tech companies, mainly in Silicon Valley, were laid off.
Experts from Goldman Sachs share a similar view, having stated in April of last year that there would be 300 million layoffs over the next 10 years due to AI development. Specialists believe that about two-thirds of professions in the USA will be exposed to some degree of automation by artificial intelligence.
According to McKinsey, layoffs caused by AI will most strongly impact office workers and those with lower incomes. At the same time, there may be an increased demand for workers in higher-paying jobs – in sectors such as healthcare, technology, and transportation.
Employees performing repetitive tasks should particularly fear job losses, as these are the tasks that are most likely to be automated. Similar concerns apply to secretaries and administrative staff (also in advertising firms and employment agencies). In the future, the situation may also change in transportation and logistics. It is estimated that even half of the jobs in the transport sector may be eliminated due to the emergence of autonomous vehicles. A revolution can also be expected in the catering industry.
Not just layoffs – new technologies create jobs
Although nearly half of the workers in Poland (48%) notice changes related to the use of AI at the workplace, as many as 43% are calm about their position – according to the Manpower report “Moods of the Polish labor market – the perspective of candidates”.
AI has been revolutionizing various branches of Polish business for years. Artificial intelligence interferes with the market structure, shapes new professional roles, and creates new opportunities. As many as 87% of respondents in the study “AI and the labor market in Poland,” conducted by Cpl Poland, Just Join IT, and RocketJobs.pl, believe that the development of artificial intelligence will lead to the creation of new types of work and new positions.
With the development of AI, there will be a growing demand for specialists in machine learning, data engineers, and scientists involved in designing, implementing, and refining systems based on artificial intelligence, as well as data analysts specializing in analyzing data generated by AI to extract valuable information and business insights. To develop, implement, and maintain AI systems, software engineers specializing in creating and adapting AI-based solutions will be needed. Moreover, we can expect an increase in demand for digital transformation consultants, whose role will be to support companies in developing strategies for using AI in business and adapting to the changing business environment.
Will AI impact salary levels?
The study “AI and the Labor Market in Poland” clearly shows that over 50% of employees and as many as 60% of employers believe that the development of AI will not affect salary levels in Polish companies. However, nearly one in four respondents believes that – due to the implementation of innovative solutions based on AI – wages may fall. Higher earnings can be expected mainly by specialists in the field of AI, who will be in demand in the labor market. On the other hand, a reduction in salaries may affect positions that will be replaced by automation and other new technologies. A decline in wages is a natural consequence of low demand for certain professions.
AI will undoubtedly influence the current shape of the labor market, but not necessarily in a negative way. Indeed, over time many positions will be replaced by artificial intelligence, but new professions will also appear. AI offers new perspectives, creates excellent conditions for introducing innovations, and provides a solid foundation for development in various sectors of the economy. Used appropriately, it can bring many benefits!
